On 26 August 2026, Vabamu hosted a BaltHerNet youth seminar, with a focus on participants turning their diaspora-related research interests into zines.
The day started with an introduction from Vabamu’s new CEO, Maarja Merivoo-Parro, about her own experience with diaspora research, and what non-academic forms it has taken – including tv programmes, books, CDs, and exhibitions (including Vabamu’s permanent exhibition Freedom Without Borders).
After this, participants were given the opportunity to create their own zines.
But what are zines? Zines are small, DIY, independent publications, in the form of a small booklet. The name comes from the word magazine. Zines can essentially take whatever form you want and are a great way to express yourself in a creative manner.
